Property or Portfolio?

When we first started out, my wife and I decided that the first thing we wanted to do was buy a home. We felt that it would be a good base for us and would help us to get a foot on the property ladder.

After a few years, we bought an investment property and were looking to buy a second one. However, we found it really difficult to find the right tenants, to keep on top of their requests and to make sure that we were compliant in every regard.

My wife’s hours were more flexible than mine so she was invariably the person that had to sort through these issues. She found very quickly that this was not her thing. We turned it over to a property management company but found this to be a bit on the expensive side. We decided we needed to find another way to make our money work for us.

Our lawyer recommended that we talk to a financial adviser at NZFP. She had referred people to them before and her clients had been very happy with the result. She felt they could help us develop a plan that would suit what we wanted to get out of our money.

We met with one of the advisers the following week and liked him immediately. He was personable, understanding, and his confidence put us at ease. We didn’t feel judged or condescended to and we felt safe going into specific detail about our situation.

We went through a process of answering questions which really helped us to clarify what we wanted to achieve and our adviser helped us set both short term and long term goals. We were so excited to achieve a level of clarity that we didn’t even know was possible.

Spending money before used to create this vague anxiety but now we know exactly where we’re at and have a budget that includes travel, eating out, and going to concerts - activities that we love! Every time we tick offa goal that we’ve achieved, we feel such a sense of accomplishment and feel excited about money and our future. That sense of security is something that has changed our lives.

Guiding Kiwis to financial wellbeing is what we do.
