A Change in Circumstance

Twenty years ago, I remarried and my new husband and I started our lives together with debt from our respective divorces as well as a blended family of five children. We were both employed and were very slowly putting some money aside for our retirement. We were conscious of feeling like we were starting too late in the game to get a really good result.

On a friend’s recommendation, we went to see an NZFP financial adviser who looked at our circumstances and gave us some practical, realistic options as to what we could do. She suggested we consider investing but we were a bit skittish at that time. I ended up looking for a higher paying job and eventually got one. He went to school in the evening so that he could get a qualification that would ensure better pay rises. Over time, we were able to pay our debt o more quickly which meant we were able to save more money.

Despite all our efforts, we were still a bit worried. We went back to see her and listened to what she had to say about the NZFP approach to investing. We wanted to play it safe and didn’t want to be waking up worrying about whether we’d lost all of our retirement money overnight. As it turned out, NZFP had an investment solution that suited us perfectly. We felt comfortable and excited about what turned out to be a really good option for us.

We also worked with our adviser to adjust our plan to include some of the things we knew we wanted to do in our retirement. We aren’t big travellers but we knew we wanted to go to Europe to visit family and to see a few other places in the world before we wouldn’t be able to. As well as providing advice and solutions we would never have thought of, she really listened to us and never made us feel judged.

Now here we are. Retirement has come around so much quicker than we thought! I can’t believe I qualify for ‘senior’ discounts. We are looking forward to a 3 month holiday to Europe and will be visiting England, France, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland. We have so much to look forward to and are so excited that we are having the retirement of our dreams. Seeing our hard work come to fruition like this is the best feeling.
